The Update on California’s Goal of 100 Percent Clean Energy

At Rick’s Energy Solutions, we’re proud to live in a state that’s on the cutting edge of clean energy in America. It seems like each week, California hits the headlines with another major advancement in the green economy, whether it’s for automobiles, buildings, or residents.

And we’re always excited to see what’s next.

Green Energy Building in California

100 percent clean energy in California

That’s why we welcomed the news back in September that California had set a goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2045. According to the mandate from then-Governor Jerry Brown, the state would have to be 50 percent of the way by 2025, and 60 percent by 2030.

With these goals in place, it would mean that the 5th largest economy in the world was committing to a clean energy future.

This, to us, was ambitious, but greatly needed.

So now that we’re about three months into the initiative, we thought it’s worth checking in on California to see where we’re at.

California has already blown past its 2020 goals

This 2020 goal set 33 percent as its target. The state is currently receiving about 40 percent of its energy from clean renewable sources; a huge spike from about 0 percent just eight years ago. That has largely been the result of statewide initiatives, national trends, and private investment. But we’re glad to see it happen.

The next note is not necessarily bad, but bumpy: critics say that getting to those next ambitious goals will be difficult due to cost, and that hooking up the entire state to solar or wind will carry a pretty steep price tag over the years.

In order to get there, it has been said that the state will need a massive expansion in energy storage, allowing for energy to come from both in and out of state. We’re interested to see how this one plays out.

Regardless, California is still at the forefront of the world’s green movement and we’re hopeful that the mandate continues to spark creativity! We’ll be sure to provide you with updates as they become available.
