California will adopt updated building codes effective Thursday, January 1, 2026. Permit Sonoma is preparing to implement the new standards, which will include changes to energy efficiency, wildfire-resistant construction, and accessibility requirements.
This update also limits local jurisdictions from extending or expanding on codes, known as Reach Code, which may slow down development. Additional guidance and resources for builders, designers, and property owners will be made available later this fall. We will keep our clients and interested parties informed about the more specific changes to the California Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Energy Code) and the changes to the California Green Building Code (CALGreen) over then next few months.
